What You Need To Use WebSURF On Your PC

To use WebSURF, your browser must meet the following criteria:
  1. It must be recent enough to support cascading style sheets.
  2. It must support SSL encryption.
  3. It must have Javascript enabled on it.
  4. It must have Cookies enabled on it.
  5. If must be able to open and print PDF documents.
See below for further information on each requirement.

1) BROWSER VERSIONS

The system was designed for Internet Explorer 5.0 and above and Mozilla Firefox, all on Windows, but has also been tested with Netscape 7.0 and IE 5.0 for MAC on MAC OS10, Opera 7.50 on Windows. It has also been tested for accessibility with Internet Explorer 6 in combination with JAWS 4.5. If you use any other browser, the pages may not display correctly.

2) SECURITY

In order to keep your details safe as they travel between your machine and ours, we use industry standard SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption. The encryption level supported by your browser must be 128-bit encryption and it must support SSL. Unfortunately, some companies and ISPs block some forms of encryption. If you find that the Log In page of WebSURF does not appear or you get an error opening the Log In page, try the instructions below. If these do not work, contact your Internet Service Provider and enquire about access to secure websites.

3) JAVASCRIPT

Javascript must be enabled on your browser in order to use WebSURF. Javascript is a basic scripting language that allows Web authors to create dynamic pages that react to user interaction. If you find the web pages do not open when expected, you should ensure that Javascript is accepted by your browser (see below for details on how to do this).

4) COOKIES

Cookies must be enabled on your browser in order to use WebSURF. A cookie is a piece of information sent to your PC when you access a website. Cookies are generally used so that websites can identify which page they should send to the user next. If you find the web page keeps going back to the same page, you should ensure that cookies are accepted by your browser (see below for details on how to do this).

How do I enable Cookies?

For Internet Explorer 5:
  • From the browser's Tools menu select "Internet Options...".
  • Select the 'Security' tab.
  • Select the 'Internet' icon.
  • Select 'Custom Level...'.
  • Click on the item "Cookies - Allow per-session cookies (not stored)"
  • Click on the item "Cookies - Allow cookies that are stored on your computer"
  • Further down in the same window, click on "Active scripting - Enable"
  • Select 'OK' to close the Internet Options dialog box.
  • Refresh the current page.
For Internet Explorer 6:
  • From the browser's Tools menu select "Internet Options...".
  • Then click on the 'Privacy' tab and move the slider to select a privacy setting for the Internet zone. Options range from Block All Cookies to Accept All Cookies.
  • Select 'OK' to confirm and close the Security Settings dialog box, then OK again to close the Internet Options dialog box.
  • Refresh the current page.
For Mozilla Firefox:
  • From the browser's Tools menu select " Options...".
  • Select the "Privacy" icon.
  • Open the Cookies section.
  • Click the "Enable Cookies" box.
  • Select 'OK' to confirm and close the Options dialog box.
  • Refresh the current page.

5) PRINTING PDF DOCUMENTS

For some print functions in WebSURF, you will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this already, you can download it free from the Adobe website. It is recommended that you install the most up-to-date version of the reader as is compatible with your system.
